Bimbadgen Winery Modernises with Energy-Efficient Gree Chillers

18 September 2024

In 2023, the Bimbadgen winery in the Hunter Valley, NSW started a journey to modernise its operations. As a forward-thinking business, the winery acknowledged its need for reliable, energy-efficient equipment that could support its production while being mindful of the environment.

The upgrade which was contracted to J&H Commercial Services, included two powerful 130kW Gree Chillers(model: LSQWF130VM/NaA-M). The chillers promised efficiency and durability, critical for a winery where temperature control is key to quality wine production.

Before the Gree Chiller upgrades, the Bimbadgen winery operated with three chillers. Two semi-hermetic compressors powered the two central chillers. Due to the age and condition of these units, they rarely cycled off during vintage, leading to inefficiencies. A third chiller was present on-site, serving as a redundancy option when needed.

J&H Commercial Services removed one buffer tank, one pump and a cooling tower, resulting in an overall cost saving for the site and a reduced amount of glycol required for the system to operate. They also installed a new Variable Speed Drive (VSD) on an existing pump, optimising energy consumption. With the installation of two new Gree 130kW chillers and these upgrades, Bimbadgen winery achieved significant energy savings during their most recent vintage.

Chief Winemaker and Head of Production, Sales & Distribution Richard Done was delighted by the results. "Since the installation of the Gree Chillers, we have seen a 30%- 40% reduction in our electricity bill, and we have had zero issues in our first season! It has given us peace of mind and trust in our equipment."

The first season after the installation was critical for Bimbadgen. With the Gree Chillers, they navigated through it seamlessly, keeping their operations cool, consistent, and energy-efficient. The drop in electricity costs was a financial benefit and a significant step toward sustainability, demonstrating the winery's commitment to reducing its environmental footprint.
